Memory has been examined within a broad framework ranging from the conscious recollection emphasis of Plato and Aristotle to the classifications of Descartes and James, from Ebbinghaus's pioneering experimental studies with nonsense syllables to the information processing models of Miller, Atkinson, Shiffrin, Craik, and Lockhart. According to the widely accepted classification, memory consists of sensory memory holding environmental stimuli momentarily, short-term memory storing information temporarily with capacity enhanced by chunking strategies, working memory actively processing information, and long-term memory offering unlimited capacity for lifelong storage. Long-term memory is divided into two main categories: explicit memory, comprising episodic memory for personal experiences and semantic memory for conceptual knowledge; and implicit memory, covering procedural memory for motor skills, priming, and conditioning processes. The fundamental operations of memory are encoding, which converts information into representations; storage, occurring through hierarchical or network models; and retrieval, enabling access to stored mental information. Key structures of the brain such as the cortex, cerebellum, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex mediate these cognitive processes. In neuropsychological memory assessment, various verbal and visual instruments are utilized, including the Öktem-SBST, California Verbal Learning Test, Wechsler Logical Memory, and the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test.
