The text comprehensively examines memory disorders resulting from brain damage, functional impairment, or neurodegenerative processes within the framework of amnesias, dementias, and aging. Under the heading of amnesias, characterized by disruptions in explicit memory, it covers the amnesic syndrome developing due to hippocampal damage with preserved procedural memory, retrograde amnesia referring to the loss of pre-trauma memories, and anterograde amnesia preventing the acquisition and registration of new information. Additionally, Korsakoff syndrome resulting from thiamine deficiency and prolonged alcohol use, transient global amnesia starting abruptly and lasting less than 24 hours, focal cortical amnesias associated with specific cortical lesions such as prosopagnosia and anomia, and psychogenic amnesias occurring after traumatic events are explained. In the category of dementias defined by progressive cognitive and behavioral decline, the stages of Alzheimer's disease as the most common type, frontotemporal dementia manifesting with loss of personality, social behavior, and language skills, vascular dementia of cerebrovascular origin, dementia with Lewy bodies where visual-spatial functions are impaired, Parkinson's disease dementia accompanied by executive function deficits alongside motor symptoms, and pseudodementia conditions without an organic origin are detailed. Finally, in the last section, it is emphasized that during healthy aging, declines occur in processing speed, working memory, and explicit memory performance, whereas implicit memory and physical encoding processes remain relatively preserved.
