This study, authored by Güler Güneş Aslan, thoroughly examines the depiction of child sexual abuse in cinema from a social work perspective through the 2004 film Mysterious Skin, directed by Gregg Araki. The work addresses the psychological transformations and coping mechanisms of two boys, Neil and Brian, who were sexually abused by their Little League baseball coach at eight years old, up to the age of 19. Utilizing Finkelhor and Browne's traumatogenic dynamic model (traumatic sexualization, betrayal, stigmatization, and powerlessness) alongside the theoretical framework of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the analysis decodes the contrasting behavioral patterns displayed by the two main characters. While Neil reframes the abuse in his mind as a form of love and feeling special, exhibiting externalized behaviors such as compulsive sexuality, prostitution, and substance abuse; Brian completely represses the trauma, demonstrating somatic symptoms like dissociation, memory loss, nosebleeds, fainting, and bedwetting, while rationalizing the missing period through an alien abduction narrative. The study emphasizes that individuals sharing the same traumatic experience can develop distinct defense mechanisms based on their own subjectivity, highlighting the necessity of evaluating child sexual abuse in social work practice and at the societal level by centering the best interests and uniqueness of the child.
