This study emphasizes the critical role of sports in the holistic rehabilitation and social integration of individuals with disabilities, examining the historical trajectory of archery in the Paralympic Games between 1960 and 2016 through document analysis. The archery competitions initiated by Dr. Ludwig Guttmann in Stoke Mandeville, England, for the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injuries formed the foundation of the Paralympic Movement and Paralympic archery. Archery, which was included in the official competition program for the first time at the 1960 Rome Paralympic Games, began with 19 athletes from 8 countries in 1960 and grew over time into a global event featuring 137 athletes from 40 countries at the 2016 Rio Games. Throughout the analyzed period from 1960 to 2016, male archers consistently outnumbered female archers in all games; nevertheless, the proportion of female athletes among total participants recorded a steady increase, rising from 17.12% at the 1980 Arnhem Games to 42.33% at the 2016 Rio Games. Winning a total of 45 medals during the period analyzed, Great Britain stands out as historically the most successful nation, while Türkiye achieved the milestone of winning its first Paralympic gold medal by a female athlete when Gizem Girişmen earned gold at the 2008 Beijing Games, in which Türkiye participated for the first time. In conclusion, Paralympic archery is an important sports discipline that contributes to empowering individuals with disabilities and boosting their self-confidence by breaking social perceptions and stereotypes.
