This study comprehensively addresses the phenomenon of motivation in sports within the framework of the fundamental principles, historical development, and mainstream theoretical approaches of social psychology. The text summarizes the historical evolution of social psychology from Ancient Greece to its acquisition of a scientific identity in the late 19th century, explaining five main approaches: sociocultural, evolutionary, social learning, phenomenological, and social cognitive theories. Stating that motivation in sports environments stems from an individual's physiological, psychological, and social needs, the effects of intrinsic motivation—encompassing dimensions of knowing, accomplishing, and experiencing stimulation—and extrinsic motivation dynamics are detailed. Furthermore, the role of behavioral contingencies, decision-making processes, and social interactions in sports motivation is emphasized. Throughout the text, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Weiner's Attribution Theory, Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory and the Concept of Self-Efficacy, Achievement Goal Theory, Self-Determination Theory, and Expectancy-Value Theory are analyzed specifically regarding sportspeople and performance environments. Within this theoretical framework, athletes' attributions of success and failure, goal orientations focused on mastery and performance climates, self-efficacy perceptions, and the decisive roles of social factors such as coaches and spectators on behavior and performance are examined. Consequently, the study demonstrates the importance of the holistic perspective provided by social psychological theories in enhancing athletic performance and ensuring sustainable motivation.
