This article addresses the transformation of journalism practices in the age of digitalization and big data, along with the emerging concept of computational journalism, through a holistic approach. Historically rooted in the initial use of computers in the 1950s and Philip Meyer’s work on Precision Journalism, the field was named by Irfan Essa in 2006. Computational journalism is based on blending computer science, social sciences, artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, and algorithms with the core principles and goals of journalism. Distinguishing itself from computer-assisted journalism and data journalism through its capabilities in automation, abstraction, and contextualizing big data, this approach reduces the cost of investigative journalism, strengthens the public watchdog function, and enables low-budget local newsrooms to produce high-quality reporting. On the other hand, it introduces significant ethical and legal challenges, such as software and technology costs, data reliability and quality, algorithmic bias, privacy violations, copyright issues, and a lack of transparency. Ultimately, in this new ecosystem where newsrooms and journalism education are evolving, it is crucial for journalists to develop computational thinking skills and adopt technological innovations without compromising traditional journalistic ethics and transparency principles.
