This study thoroughly examines the physiological, biochemical, and psychological effects as well as the implementation principles of interval training, which is a fundamental method for developing aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. Physical activities such as running are directly associated with cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle endurance, mental health, and the cardiovascular system. In aerobic endurance performance, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), lactate threshold, and running economy constitute the key determining factors. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) and sprint interval training (SIT), which serve as effective alternatives to traditional moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT), offer significant improvements in VO2max, anaerobic power, exercise performance, and body composition while providing high time efficiency. However, because SIT requires higher neuromuscular load and anaerobic metabolism, it may induce greater fatigue and self-regulation demands in athletes. Furthermore, interval training practices induce positive adaptations in biochemical blood parameters—such as hemoglobin, red blood cells, HDL cholesterol, and immune responses—that support performance. Combinations of HIIT shock microcycles (HIIT-SM) and low-intensity training (LIT) contribute to performance peaking during competition periods by optimizing overall training volume. Finally, specific heart rate, duration, repetition count, and recovery criteria established for aerobic threshold, anaerobic threshold, MaxVO2, and lactic acid tolerance maximize training efficiency by providing regeneration opportunities and time-saving advantages when thoroughly planned according to athletes' training age and experience levels.
