In this study authored by Nazım Şen, the historical development of the concept of leadership, the general characteristics possessed by leaders, their fundamental functions, and particularly transformational leadership theories are examined in detail. Leadership is defined as a process of influencing individuals and groups to achieve common goals, acquiring different dimensions over time according to changing organizational and structural conditions. While effective leaders are expected to possess core qualities such as innovativeness, self-confidence, ethical behavior, courtesy, and sensitivity, functions such as defining tasks, planning, briefing, controlling, evaluating, motivating, organizing, and setting an example lie at the center of leadership functions. In a historical context, leadership theories are categorized into universal, behavioral, situational, and inspirational models. Transformational leadership, which stands out within inspirational leadership theories, represents an approach that inspires followers, offers a forward-looking vision, enhances their potential, and supports their personal development. This leadership model consists of four fundamental components: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. Furthermore, the study addresses the core differences between transactional leadership and transformational leadership, authentic leadership, and dark sides such as pseudo-transformational leadership involving the manipulative use of leadership. In conclusion, it is emphasized that an authentic transformational leadership approach, particularly in sports organizations and teams, fosters trust, organizational commitment, and high performance.
