This study examines in detail the transformation in the participation of individuals with disabilities in sports throughout history within the framework of changing societal perceptions of disability and disability models. Throughout Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the traditional disability model shaped by religious, philosophical, and cultural beliefs prevailed; due to the understanding of sports centered on the ideal of a perfect body, aesthetic concerns, and preparation for war, individuals with disabilities were completely excluded from society, social life, and sports activities. With the emergence of modern sports in the 19th century, principles of competition, high performance, and record-breaking came to the fore, and under the influence of the medical model during this period, disabled individuals were viewed merely as patients requiring medical treatment and rehabilitation. The initial steps that began in the late 19th century with the organization of deaf individuals establishing sports clubs and the creation of Deaflympics gained new momentum after World War II through wheelchair sports initiated by Dr. Ludwig Guttmann at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Institutionalized internationally with the 1960 Rome Paralympic Games, this process made significant progress thanks to awareness efforts by international organizations such as the UN and WHO, alongside the adoption of social, biopsychosocial, and human rights models. Today, disability sports no longer serve solely for rehabilitation purposes but have assumed a global character based on elite-level competition through adapted physical education, inclusive sports policies, and advancing assistive technologies.
